How to buy an LIC policy online
Almost the entire process of taking out an LIC policy can now be done from home, anywhere in India.
This is the actual sequence, including the parts most pages leave out — underwriting, medicals, and what happens between paying and the policy being issued.
The process, in order
Work out the cover you need before looking at plans — the calculators here do that from your income, dependants and liabilities. Then compare plans on their real terms, start the proposal online, upload your documents, complete a medical examination if underwriting asks for one, and follow the application until LIC issues the policy.
Nothing is confirmed until LIC itself confirms it. A policy is not active because a payment went through; it is active when LIC issues it, and you should be suspicious of anyone who tells you otherwise.
What you will need
Have these ready before starting, and the proposal takes minutes rather than days:
Photo identity proof
Aadhaar, PAN, passport or voter ID.
Address proof
Any document LIC accepts showing your current address.
A recent photograph
A clear passport-style photo.
Income proof
Needed once the sum assured passes LIC’s threshold — salary slips, ITR, or Form 16.
Existing policy details
If you already hold cover, LIC asks about it on the proposal.
Bank details
For premium payment and, later, for the maturity or claim payout.
When a medical examination is required
It depends on your age, the sum assured, and your declared health. Smaller sums assured at younger ages frequently need nothing. Larger cover, older applicants, or a declared condition normally trigger one.
Where it is needed, LIC nominates an empanelled centre near you and bears the cost. This is the only part of the process that is not online.

Active plans to look at
These are LIC plans currently active in our dataset, matched on the criteria described above. Each page quotes LIC's own brochure and links to the source PDF. Nothing here is ranked by what earns the most.

Common questions
Is buying LIC online cheaper than through an agent?
The premium for a given plan, age, term and sum assured is set by LIC and does not change based on how the policy was arranged. Some plans are sold only online or only offline, and those genuinely differ in price — but the same plan does not cost less by one route.
How long does it take for the policy to be issued?
A straightforward proposal with complete documents and no medical requirement is usually quick. Anything requiring a medical examination or clarification takes longer. You can track the status rather than having to chase it.
Can I cancel after buying?
Yes. Every LIC policy has a free-look period — commonly 30 days from receiving the document — during which you can return it and get the premium back less proportionate risk cover, medical costs and stamp duty.
Is it safe to pay premiums online?
Pay LIC directly through their own portal or an authorised channel. Be wary of anyone asking you to transfer premium to a personal account.
Not sure which of these applies to you?
Five questions, no account needed, and it will tell you honestly if nothing fits rather than pushing the closest match.
