The best LIC policy for a girl child

Parents searching this usually want one of two things: money available when their daughter reaches college age, or a guaranteed amount secured for her regardless of what happens to them.

LIC’s child plans are the same for a son or a daughter — eligibility, premium and benefits do not differ by gender. There is one genuine exception, and it is worth knowing about.

The one real difference LIC makes for a girl child

Under LIC’s Amritbaal, the policy loan interest rate carries a concession where the life assured is a female child and the loan is taken for her education. That is stated in LIC’s own brochure for the plan, and it is the only gender-linked term among the current child plans.

Everything else — entry age, premium rate, sum assured, maturity benefit — is identical for a boy and a girl. Any site telling you there is a special “girl child LIC plan” with better returns is selling you something. The exact concession and current rate are in the brochure linked on the plan page; confirm them there rather than taking a number from any website, including this one.

What actually matters when choosing

Rather than gender, these are the questions that change which plan fits:

When do you need the money?

Education costs arrive in instalments from roughly 17 or 18 onward. A money-back structure pays at intervals; an endowment pays once at maturity.

Who is the policy on?

Child plans insure the child’s life, with the parent as proposer. A term plan on the earning parent protects the goal itself if that income stops — a very different, and often more important, job.

What happens if you cannot keep paying?

The Premium Waiver Benefit Rider keeps a child policy going if the proposer dies. Without it, the plan can lapse at exactly the moment it was meant to help.

How long can you commit?

These are long contracts. Surrendering early almost always returns less than was paid in, especially in the first few years.

Common questions

Is there a special LIC policy only for girl children?

No. LIC’s child plans are open to sons and daughters on identical terms. The one gender-linked term in the current range is the policy loan interest concession under Amritbaal where the loan is for a female child’s education.

At what age can I start a policy for my daughter?

The current child plans can start from as young as 30 days old, with maximum entry ages ranging up to 12 or 13 depending on the plan. The exact figures are on each plan page, taken from LIC’s brochure.

What happens to the policy if something happens to me?

If the Premium Waiver Benefit Rider was added, remaining premiums are waived and the policy continues to maturity. Without it, the policy would need someone else to keep paying, or it lapses.

Will the maturity amount be enough for her education?

That depends entirely on the sum assured you choose and how long the policy runs. Use the child education corpus calculator to work backwards from a target rather than guessing at a premium.

Not sure which of these applies to you?

Five questions, no account needed, and it will tell you honestly if nothing fits rather than pushing the closest match.
